Heatmap of moves played on the chessboard

Heatmap of a chessboard showing the number of moves played on each square across about 2,300 online games. Central squares, especially d5 and d4, are the most frequently played.

What the map shows

The visualization shows a chessboard of 8 columns (a to h) and 8 ranks, with each square colored according to the number of moves played. The darker the red hue, the more the square was used, with a maximum at d5, followed by d4. Filters let you choose the color of the pieces (black, white or both) and the type of piece. The squares along the edges and in the corners are little used, apart from g8 and g1. The map is a diversion of the cartographic principle to a non-geographic space, with no numerical scale in the visible legend; it represents the games of a single player only.
